Today, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan, former Sokoto State governor and Senator Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, and former Edo State governors Chief Lucky Igbinedion and Chief Odigie Oyegun, among other notable leaders, gathered to inaugurate the newly rebuilt and expanded Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Edo State.

The governor expressed deep gratitude to all dignitaries who honored the event, marking the launch of the transformed 250-bed Stella Obasanjo Hospital, alongside a new Crèche and Food Court at the State Secretariat Complex. Originally established by Chief Igbinedion, the hospital had deteriorated over time. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it served as a treatment and isolation center, leading to a decision to redevelop the facility into a specialized care hospital on its expansive 20-hectare site.
In addition, the governor relocated key medical functions from the decommissioned Central Hospital to this upgraded center, turning it into a state-of-the-art medical facility as part of a broader strategy to make Edo State a destination for medical tourism.

This commissioning also highlights the governor’s commitment to strengthening the state’s primary healthcare system. With the establishment of a dedicated primary healthcare agency and the refurbishment of 60 primary healthcare centers, the state now boasts one of the most robust healthcare frameworks in Nigeria, aiming to have a primary healthcare center in every ward.
The governor emphasized that beyond infrastructure, healthcare services must embody compassion, care, and hope — principles at the heart of the Stella Obasanjo Hospital’s mission.
