Despite the government’s efforts to increase allowances for NYSC members, some states still struggle to provide adequate stipends, leaving Corps members with minimal support. A recent investigation by ABNews reveals that many Corps members in Plateau State, particularly in the Pankshin Zone, are receiving alarmingly low amounts—or in some cases, nothing at all—from their Primary Place of Assignment (PPA).
A Corps member, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed disappointment over the situation, explaining that the reluctance of some PPAs to provide fair stipends has placed a heavy financial burden on Corps members. The issue is particularly prevalent among educational institutions in the area, where some Corps members report receiving less than 5,000 Naira per month, while others are forced to endure lengthy waits before any payments are made.
The following monthly stipends were reported by Corps members at specific institutions:
Holy Cross School: 4,000 Naira
Government Secondary School Bet: 3,000 Naira
Good Shepherd Secondary School: 4,000 Naira
St. Benedict School: 4,000 Naira
In addition to these low payments, institutions like the College of Health and the Federal University of Education in Pankshin reportedly delay stipends for as long as six months, leaving Corps members without consistent financial support.
The issue has sparked concern among Corps members, who feel that their contributions to the communities they serve are undervalued. Many are calling for state-level interventions to ensure that PPAs honor their obligations to NYSC members, providing them with the financial stability needed during their service year.
