The Firstmade Foundation is taking a bold step towards uniting communities in Kogi State, Nigeria, with the launch of the inaugural Egbe Mekun Marathon. This December, the marathon promises to be more than a race—it’s a celebration of peace, culture, and athleticism aimed at creating positive impact in Okunland and beyond.

At the helm of this initiative is Ln. Olufemi Olusanya, an active member of the Lions Club International and founder of the Firstmade Foundation. Known for his philanthropic work, Olusanya is passionate about fostering peace and development within Yagba West Local Government Area and neighboring communities. His vision for the marathon extends beyond the finish line, touching on community solidarity, youth empowerment, and even tourism potential for the region.

In an engaging conversation with DAYO EMMANUEL, Olusanya shared insights into the goals of this landmark event, the meticulous preparations undertaken, and the transformative potential it holds for Kogi State.

The Vision Behind the Marathon

For Olusanya, the idea of a city marathon in Egbe arose from a desire to unite the youth and instill a sense of belonging. “The Egbe Mekun Marathon is our way of promoting youth development and unity,” he says. “We want to create a communal event that showcases Okunland and builds pride within our local communities.” By incorporating the marathon into the holiday season, Olusanya sees it as a meaningful way for people to come together and share in a celebration of peace and friendship.

Ensuring a Safe and Memorable Experience

Organizing a marathon comes with logistical challenges, but Olusanya is committed to making it a safe, enjoyable, and well-organized event. “Safety is paramount,” he states. The Firstmade Foundation has arranged for medical teams and cooling stations along the route and coordinated with local law enforcement and security personnel to maintain order and security.

Rewarding Achievement and Inspiring Future Champions

Cash prizes, commemorative plaques, and consolation awards await the top runners, but Olusanya hopes that the event offers more than just material rewards. “Egbe has a unique landscape, with hills and valleys that offer a challenging course similar to those in regions renowned for marathon champions,” he says. He envisions the marathon as a potential platform to uncover and inspire future champions who might someday represent Kogi State on national and global stages.

Building Strong Local Support for Community Empowerment

The Firstmade Foundation views the marathon as part of its broader mission to uplift communities and promote social welfare. The foundation has gained significant local support, including backing from local leaders and community groups, aligning with its objectives to improve the lives of the vulnerable and marginalized. “The marathon embodies our mission to serve humanity and enhance the quality of life within our community,” Olusanya explains.

Reaching Beyond Egbe: Statewide Participation and Engagement

The foundation has cast a wide net to attract participants not only from Egbe but from neighboring towns, councils, and even other states. Through extensive awareness campaigns, the marathon has captured the interest of individuals, schools, and youth groups across Kogi State, setting the stage for a diverse turnout.

Security as a Priority in a Region Facing Challenges

Amid recent security concerns in the region, the marathon organizers are taking additional precautions to ensure participant safety. With the establishment of a new military barracks in Egbe, thanks to the efforts of Senator Sunday Karimi, Olusanya feels confident that the marathon will be secure. “The presence of over 150 soldiers provides a vital layer of security for the event,” he remarks.

As anticipation builds for the marathon, Olusanya’s dedication to the people of Okunland and Kogi State shines through. The Egbe Mekun Marathon stands as a testament to his belief in the power of sports, community, and culture to foster unity and create opportunities for the youth. This December, the streets of Egbe will not only witness the determination of runners but will echo with the spirit of a community coming together to celebrate resilience, peace, and shared aspirations.
