At the helm of this initiative is Ln. Olufemi Olusanya, an active member of the Lions Club International and founder of the Firstmade Foundation. For Olusanya, the idea of a city marathon in Egbe arose from a desire to unite the youth and instill a sense of belonging. “The Egbe Mekun Marathon is our way of promoting youth development and unity,” he says. “We want to create a communal event that showcases Okunland and builds pride within our local communities.” By incorporating the marathon into the holiday season, Olusanya sees it as a meaningful way for people to come together and share in a celebration of peace and friendship.
Ensuring a Safe and Memorable Experience
Organizing a marathon comes with logistical challenges, but Olusanya is committed to making it a safe, enjoyable, and well-organized event. “Safety is paramount,” he states. The Firstmade Foundation has arranged for medical teams and cooling stations along the route and coordinated with local law enforcement and security personnel to maintain order and security.
Rewarding Achievement and Inspiring Future Champions
Cash prizes, commemorative plaques, and consolation awards await the top runners, but Olusanya hopes that the event offers more than just material rewards. “Egbe has a unique landscape, with hills and valleys that offer a challenging course similar to those in regions renowned for marathon champions,” he says. He envisions the marathon as a potential platform to uncover and inspire future champions who might someday represent Kogi State on national and global stages.

Amid recent security concerns in the region, the marathon organizers are taking additional precautions to ensure participant safety. With the establishment of a new military barracks in Egbe, thanks to the efforts of Senator Sunday Karimi, Olusanya feels confident that the marathon will be secure. “The presence of over 150 soldiers provides a vital layer of security for the event,” he remarks.
