27th November 2024 – A fire broke out at the Metro FM studio located within Radio Nigeria’s Broadcasting House in Ikoyi on Wednesday evening, sparking panic and prompting swift action from emergency responders. The fire, which started around 5:00 PM, quickly filled the building with smoke, triggering an immediate mobilization of firefighting teams and security personnel.

According to sources at Radio Nigeria, the fire began in the Metro FM studio, although the exact cause is still under investigation. Firefighters arrived quickly with two fire trucks, but after the initial water supply was depleted, additional tankers were dispatched to help bring the blaze under control.

In addition to the quick response from emergency services, staff from both Radio Nigeria and Voice of Nigeria (VON) were instrumental in managing the situation. Many VON staff were already on the premises and immediately assisted in switching off office lights to reduce electrical risks. They also helped coordinate the evacuation and ensure the safety of everyone present.

A strong security presence was established, with several police officers and military personnel deployed to secure the area and allow the fire service to work unhindered. Their presence helped maintain order as emergency responders battled the blaze.

An eyewitness account from the Chairman of the Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU) at the Voice of Nigeria Broadcasting House, Ikoyi Chapter, offered further insight into the situation. The Chairman expressed relief that the fire occurred during daylight hours, which helped prevent a potentially worse outcome. He said, “Thank God this incident happened during the day, when there was enough visibility and quick access to safety measures. All VON facilities remain intact and unharmed, and we are grateful for the swift actions of everyone involved.”

At this time, there are no reports of injuries, but the extent of the damage to the Metro FM studio and surrounding is still unclear. Emergency teams continue to work on the scene, and further updates will follow as more information becomes available.

The combined efforts of fire services, security agencies, and staff from Radio Nigeria and Voice of Nigeria have been critical in managing the crisis. Authorities have assured the public that they are working to bring the fire under full control.
