Ikotun, Lagos (ABNews) – Ikotun bus stop, once notorious for its unending traffic congestion and chaotic scenes caused by unregulated activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), has undergone a remarkable transformation. Thanks to the combined efforts of the Lagos State Task Force and the NURTW, the area is now free-flowing and efficient, much to the delight of commuters and residents.

This change follows a series of interventions aimed at addressing the root causes of the gridlock. ABNews had earlier reported how the NURTW’s revenue collection methods exacerbated the traffic woes. However, the recent collaboration between the Task Force and the Union has brought much-needed order to the busy hub.

Voices From the Field

Speaking with ABNews, Mr. Fatai, a tricycle (Keke Maruwa) operator and union staff member, expressed his satisfaction with the new system. Armed with a stick to ensure compliance, he explained how the improved organization benefits everyone:

“Now, no vehicle is allowed to load passengers on the road; they must queue properly. This makes it easier for us to operate and collect our revenue without unnecessary trouble. The road is now free, especially for people going to work, and it’s a welcome development.”

Another union controller, Mr. Babatunde, commended the initiative for easing the traffic nightmare. He highlighted the removal of market traders from the roadside as a key factor in the improvement:

“The market men and women displaying their goods used to block the road, leaving us with no space to load vehicles. Their umbrellas also provided cover for robbers and fraudsters to hide and escape during police chases. Now that they’ve been removed, the bus stop is clear and well-organized. It’s become an enviable major transit hub.”

Enforcement and Order

ABNews observed a visible presence of Task Force vans and police officers patrolling the area to ensure compliance with the new rules. This sustained enforcement has been pivotal in maintaining order, enabling vehicles and pedestrians to move freely.

A Model for Lagos

The transformation of Ikotun bus stop serves as a model for addressing congestion in other busy areas across Lagos State. The success showcases the impact of a collaborative approach between law enforcement and local unions in tackling urban traffic challenges.

Residents and road users have called for the initiative to be sustained, ensuring that Ikotun bus stop remains a beacon of organized and efficient public transport in Lagos.
