Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the payment of a 13th-month salary for state workers and introduced a policy granting automatic employment to First-Class graduates of Edo origin in the state civil service.
The announcement, made by the Head of Service (HOS), Dr. Anthony Okungbowa, is part of a broader effort to boost workforce morale and attract top-tier talent into the public sector.
According to Dr. Okungbowa, the new initiative, termed the Graduate Development Programme (GDP), aims to enhance the quality of manpower in the state for improved service delivery. “The programme will bring in First-Class graduates and other high-grade degree holders into the service to develop and ensure quality manpower. This move is not only about recruitment but also about retention, which is a major challenge in sustaining such programmes,” he said.
The policy applies to First-Class graduates from 2020 onward, with possibilities for further extensions. Beneficiaries will gain diverse experiences by rotating through various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) and may also be integrated into private-sector roles to broaden their expertise before returning to government service.
Dr. Okungbowa expressed gratitude to the governor for this initiative, noting its potential to attract and retain exceptional talents while motivating the existing workforce. “The 13th-month salary will serve as an incentive, encouraging employees to give their best and contribute to Edo State’s growth,” he added.
The government, in collaboration with Edo Innovate, is also working to improve the sustainability and impact of the programme. Governor Okpebholo’s administration continues to prioritize innovative policies that promote human capital development and efficient governance.
