A community in Omu-Aran, Kwara State, was thrown into mourning on January 1, 2025, when a young bricklayer labourer, Segun, reportedly killed his mother, popularly known as lya Alapo, after attending a crossover service.
The incident occurred in the early hours of the new year when Segun, who hails from Okene but resides in Omu-Aran with his mother and other siblings, allegedly returned home under the influence of a substance locally known as kolo.
According to eyewitnesses, the tragic sequence began when Segun started destroying his mother’s sewing machine. When his mother confronted him, he turned violent, inflicting severe injuries on her.
Neighbors who rushed to intervene found lya Alapo critically injured. She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries after receiving initial treatment.
An elder in the community (name withheld) acting on the directive of Chief Ojomu, the community leader, reported the incident to the police. Segun was promptly arrested and remains in police custody as investigations continue.
In an emotional statement, Segun’s sister described the incident as a regrettable tragedy.
The tragic event has left the community in shock, with many residents calling for more awareness and action against substance abuse, which has been linked to growing cases of violence.
Police authorities have yet to release an official statement on the incident, but further details are expected in the coming days.
