In a decisive move to address environmental degradation, the Kwara State Government has ordered the temporary closure of all forests within its jurisdiction, effective immediately. This decision emerged from a high-level meeting convened by the Ministry of Environment, under the leadership of the Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge.

Hajia Buge emphasized that the temporary closure is imperative for the natural regeneration of forests, which have been severely impacted by human activities. The Commissioner highlighted the rampant illegal logging for charcoal production and the indiscriminate cutting of trees by sawmill operators, which have disrupted the ecosystem and hindered reforestation efforts.

“The Forestry Directorate will engage various stakeholders to restore order and ensure sustainable forest management practices,” Hajia Buge stated. She urged those involved in forestry-related businesses to adhere to the closure directive and cooperate with the Ministry to safeguard the state’s environmental health.

The Commissioner warned that any violations of the closure order would be met with strict legal penalties, reinforcing the government’s commitment to preserving the environment and promoting sustainable practices.

Shakirat Muritala, the Press Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, reiterated the government’s dedication to enforcing compliance and protecting Kwara State’s natural resources.
