In response to the recent abduction of three individuals in Agbamu, the Chairman of Irepodun Local Government, Hon. Abdulazeez Yakubu, has taken urgent steps to address the growing security concerns in the area. He convened an emergency security meeting on Monday, bringing together law enforcement agencies, local security outfits, community leaders, and senior government officials to devise strategies for combating crime and ensuring public safety.
Chairman Reaffirms Commitment to Security
Hon. Yakubu expressed deep concern over the resurgence of criminal activities, attributing the situation to complacency among security personnel following earlier successes during the initial months of his administration. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to security, stressing that criminals remain active and security agencies must remain vigilant.
“Security is a serious business, and we cannot afford to relax. The local security forces must do everything within their power to ensure the safe return of the kidnapped victims. The government does not encourage ransom payments, and we must prevent such incidents from recurring,” he declared.
He further urged residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activities, emphasizing that security is a shared responsibility that requires community involvement.
Security Challenges and Demands
During the meeting, security representatives highlighted critical challenges affecting their operations, including inadequate weapons, poor funding, and the lack of government support for injured personnel. A key concern raised was the frequent release of arrested criminals, who often return to target security personnel and their families.
Security groups also called for government intervention in providing fuel, logistics, and ammunition. Some officers advocated for a more decisive approach in dealing with criminals, noting that law enforcement faces legal restrictions, while criminals act without restraint.
Disunity among security outfits was another pressing issue, with representatives pointing out the lack of coordination among various security groups. They also noted that voluntary personnel often outperform salaried officers but receive little recognition or support.
Female security operatives particularly raised concerns about their safety, stating that criminals often identify security personnel, while officers lack intelligence on criminal activities.
Call for Immediate Action
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from all stakeholders to intensify efforts against criminal elements in Irepodun LGA. Hon. Yakubu assured security operatives that their concerns would be addressed, emphasizing the need for swift and coordinated action to restore peace and prevent further kidnappings.
He reiterated his administration’s zero-tolerance stance on crime and called on security agencies to implement immediate measures to safeguard lives and properties across the local government.
