In a strategic move to enhance urban aesthetics and enforce outdoor advertising regulations, the Kwara State Government has inaugurated a Task Force on Advertising and Signage Restructuring to oversee compliance and modernization efforts.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Monday in Ilorin, the Commissioner for Communications and Chairperson of the task force, Hon. Bolanle Olukoju, emphasized the government’s commitment to eliminating unauthorized billboards, posters, and banners while promoting global best practices in outdoor advertising.
Government to Enforce Compliance, Remove Illegal Billboards
Following the inauguration, the task force held its inaugural meeting, where Olukoju reiterated the importance of stakeholder engagement in ensuring a smooth transition to the new regulatory framework. She outlined the committee’s key responsibilities, which include:
- Dismantling unauthorized advertising structures across the state.
- Collaborating with stakeholders in the advertising and outdoor media sectors.
- Developing a sustainable policy framework to prevent future violations.
As part of the restructuring process, the Commissioner announced an immediate suspension of billboard registration and license renewals until further notice.
Task Force Composition
The task force includes representatives from both government agencies and the private sector:
- Chairperson: Commissioner for Communications
- Co-Chair: Commissioner for Works and Transport
- Members: General Manager, Kwara State Signage and Advertisement Agency; Representatives from the Ministry of Environment, KWARTMA, NSCDC, Nigerian Police Force, and private sector stakeholders; Managing Director of AKOT Prints; and a Senior Administrative Officer from the Ministry of Communications (Secretary).
Authorities Assure Transparent and Professional Enforcement
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Alhaji Yahaya Muhammed, assured that all enforcement measures would be carried out professionally and in the best interest of the state’s development.
This initiative marks a significant step toward transforming Kwara’s urban landscape, ensuring that outdoor advertising aligns with modern city standards and public safety regulations.
