NANS Partners with FRSC to Combat Fake Number Plates

Launches Nationwide Sensitization Campaign

Abuja, Nigeria – February 7, 2025 – The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has partnered with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to intensify efforts against the proliferation of fake number plates in the country. The collaboration aims to raise awareness among students and the public on the dangers of using unauthorized vehicle registration plates.

The partnership was formalized during a high-level meeting between the NANS leadership and the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, held in Abuja on Friday, February 7, 2025.

NANS Commits to Nationwide Sensitization

Leading the NANS delegation was the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Affairs, Hon. Sunday Ashefon, alongside NANS President, Comrade Lucky Omonefe, and Senate President, Comrade Akintoye Babatunde, among other executive members.

Hon. Ashefon strongly condemned the widespread use of fake number plates, describing it as a serious threat to national security and a violation of the country’s transportation regulations. He reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to upholding law and order, warning that the government would not tolerate actions that undermine the efforts of the FRSC and other law enforcement agencies.

“NANS, as a reputable and recognized student body, will not allow its name to be associated with any illegal activity. We are fully committed to supporting the FRSC in eradicating fake number plates from our roads,” he stated.

FRSC Commends NANS’ Support

NANS President, Comrade Lucky Omonefe, lauded the FRSC’s proactive measures under the leadership of Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed. He pledged that his administration would mobilize students across the country to educate them on the risks and legal consequences of using counterfeit number plates.

“The present leadership of NANS is focused, disciplined, and ready to work in collaboration with the FRSC to ensure safer roads in Nigeria,” Omonefe affirmed.

In response, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed welcomed the partnership, emphasizing its significance in enhancing national security and road safety.

“We appreciate the support of NANS and look forward to working together to achieve our common goal of ensuring compliance with road safety regulations,” he said.

Joint Efforts to Curb Fake Number Plates

As part of the agreement, NANS will launch an aggressive sensitization campaign across tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The initiative will educate students and motorists on the importance of obtaining genuine number plates from authorized dealers and the legal repercussions of using fake ones.

This collaboration underscores the FRSC’s ongoing efforts to eliminate fraudulent vehicle registration while fostering a culture of compliance among young Nigerians.
