Warns of Negative Impact on Nigeria’s Image

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed strong disapproval of the recent suspension of elected officials in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu, warning that such actions could tarnish Nigeria’s global reputation.

Speaking in Abuja on Saturday as the Chairman of the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium, Jonathan voiced disappointment over the removal of elected leaders, emphasizing that decisions of this nature send troubling signals about the state of governance in the country.

“These actions by key actors in the executive and legislative arms of government paint the country in a negative light,” he stated.

The controversy stems from President Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing escalating political tensions. The declaration led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the state House of Assembly for six months. Tinubu defended the decision, arguing that it was necessary to restore stability in the politically volatile state.

As part of the emergency measures, the president appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas as the interim administrator to oversee governance. Tinubu clarified that while the executive and legislative arms were affected, the judiciary would continue its functions without interference.

Amid mounting reactions, Jonathan broke his silence, acknowledging that former presidents typically refrain from commenting on political developments to avoid heightening tensions. However, he explained that persistent calls from concerned Nigerians, particularly from the Niger Delta, compelled him to speak out.

Jonathan also raised concerns about perceived interference in judicial processes, cautioning that when the judiciary appears to be under undue influence, public confidence in the legal system is eroded.

His remarks add to the growing debate over the situation in Rivers State, with political observers closely watching the unfolding developments and their implications for democratic governance in Nigeria.
