Residents of Ijegun in Alimosho Local Government Area have raised an urgent alarm over the increasing presence of street urchins and the reckless activities of commercial motorcycle (Okada) riders, warning that the situation could spiral out of control if left unchecked.

Initially a small issue, the number of urchins loitering around traffic has grown exponentially, leading to heightened concerns about harassment and extortion of commuters, especially young boys and girls. These individuals often demand money from unsuspecting passengers, creating an atmosphere of fear and lawlessness.

According to residents, the problem has worsened with the influx of urchins from Ikotun, where authorities have failed to address similar concerns. Now, many have relocated to Ijegun Roundabout, raising fears that they may soon become a major societal menace if no urgent action is taken.

A related issue is the increasing disorderliness of Okada riders in Ijegun. With little regulation, vehicles are now forced to compete with motorcycles for the right of way, causing frequent traffic congestion and near-accidents. Some residents believe that since local indigenes now control the transport union at the junction, they should take responsibility for ensuring that Okada riders do not become a nuisance.

Speaking with ABNews, three police officers in charge of traffic control in the area admitted that they have done their best to manage the situation, but their efforts have yielded little success. One officer, who requested anonymity, disclosed that reports have been made to higher authorities in Isheri, yet no action has been taken.

She also expressed deep concern over the activities of the bike riders at the Ijegun bus stop, stating that only the intervention of a government task force could effectively restore order. Additionally, she revealed that some of the urchins have turned to nighttime crimes, including theft, further instilling fear among residents.

She emphasized the need for a well-planned and strategic crackdown, warning that whenever security agents arrive, the culprits often escape into nearby community buildings.

Residents are now calling on the Lagos State Government and relevant authorities to take immediate action before the situation escalates into a full-blown crisis.
