Calls for Unity and Lasting Peace

Oyo, Nigeria – The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Engr. Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has pledged to ensure peace and harmony between the people of Oyo and Afijio communities amidst ongoing land disputes threatening social cohesion in the area.

The monarch made the commitment in response to appeals from concerned indigenes urging royal intervention in the protracted conflict. In a statement issued by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, Alaafin Owoade emphasized the critical need for peace-building efforts in today’s diverse and interconnected society.

“Peace-building is more than conflict resolution; it is a holistic approach that addresses the root causes of discord and fosters a culture of trust and collaboration,” Oba Owoade stated. “It involves dialogue, education, and empowerment to create sustainable peace.”

He decried the rising tension between the two interwoven communities, questioning the rationale behind their confrontation over land ownership. “Why must communities that have coexisted for decades and within the same metropolis be at loggerheads? United we stand, divided we fall. There must be a ceasefire—enough is enough,” he declared.

The Alaafin revealed plans to convene a meeting with critical stakeholders and opinion leaders to address the matter. He said his intervention would include community education, awareness campaigns, and the creation of safe spaces for open dialogue and reconciliation.

According to him, “Open and honest communication is essential for building trust and understanding. Through platforms for dialogue, individuals can express their views and work together on solutions that benefit the entire metropolis.”

Calling for immediate action, the monarch urged all parties to embrace peace from their individual homes and communities. “Let there be peace in every community. With God as our creator, we are one family. Let us walk together in perfect harmony. Let peace begin with each of us,” he appealed.

The royal appeal comes as tensions over land ownership continue to strain relations between the neighbouring communities, prompting concerns over potential escalation if left unresolved.
