Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, on Friday met with Quadri Yusuf Alabi, the young Nigerian who was recently freed after what Obi described as an “unjust and illegal incarceration.”

Obi, who shared the meeting in a statement posted on his social media platform, expressed deep gratitude to the legal team led by human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, as well as activists Dele Farotimi and Ms. Hassana Nurudeen, for their relentless efforts in securing the boy’s release.

“I had the opportunity to meet with Quadri Yusuf Alabi, the young boy whose story moved us all. After enduring unjust and illegal incarceration, he is finally free,” Obi stated.

The former Anambra governor noted that despite the traumatic experience, Quadri remains determined to pursue his education. “One thing stood out clearly: his unwavering desire for education. Despite all he has been through, his only dream is to return to school and complete his education—and I will make sure he gets it,” Obi assured.

Describing the boy’s determination as inspiring, Obi said it serves as a call to action and pledged to support Quadri’s academic pursuit fully.

However, the statesman stressed that securing the boy’s release is not enough and called for accountability from those responsible for the wrongful incarceration. “We must not stop at his release. Those responsible for his illegal incarceration must be held accountable,” he said.

Obi reaffirmed his commitment to building a Nigeria founded on justice, equity, education, and the rule of law. “Together, we will build a Nigeria where education, freedom, rule of law, equity and justice, and the care and protection of the less privileged will stand as the foundation of our democracy.”

He concluded with his enduring campaign mantra: A New Nigeria is Possible.
