The 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has extended heartfelt congratulations to His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV, on his election as the new Supreme Pontiff and spiritual leader of over 1.3 billion Catholics around the world.
Obi described the emergence of Pope Leo XIV as a timely divine blessing, stating that his leadership comes at a crucial moment in the life of the Church and the world at large. “His election reaffirms our shared belief in divine guidance and the enduring strength of spiritual leadership,” Obi noted.
He commended the College of Cardinals for their prayerful discernment and unity in selecting a new Holy Father, saying their decision reflects the Church’s spiritual depth, fidelity to tradition, and openness to the Holy Spirit.
Obi also appreciated the global Catholic faithful who joined in fervent prayer during the conclave, adding that “our collective petitions have borne fruit in the emergence of a new shepherd to lead with love, courage, and truth.”
Reflecting on the inaugural address of Pope Leo XIV, Obi described it as “reassuring and inspiring,” highlighting the Pope’s emphasis on humility, justice, peace, and solidarity with the vulnerable. “In a world troubled by division and despair, his message has rekindled hope in the hearts of millions,” he said.
Obi praised the Pope’s extensive background as a member of the Order of Saint Augustine, canon lawyer, missionary, and former Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, noting that his decades of service, especially in Peru, bring great value to the Universal Church.
“As someone who believes deeply in moral leadership, I pray that Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate will usher in a season of spiritual renewal, honest dialogue, and unwavering service to humanity,” Obi said.
He concluded by invoking divine guidance for the new Pope as he assumes the sacred duty of leading the Church in these challenging times.
