The Kwara State Government has raised concerns over a heightened risk of flooding in parts of the state, particularly in Jebba and other vulnerable communities within Moro Local Government Area, following an alert issued by the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre in Abuja.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, through it’s Press Secretary, Ashaolu Omotola, the forecast—driven by expected heavy rainfall—places several parts of the country on a flood watch, with Kwara not exempt.
While the state has not yet experienced any flood emergency, the government emphasized that the alert comes at the height of the rainy season, a period often marked by heavy downpours and sudden flash floods.
“This is not a time for panic, but for preparedness,” the statement read. “We urge residents, particularly those in low-lying areas, to take proactive steps to ensure their safety and the safety of others.”
The Ministry outlined several precautionary measures for residents:
- Consider relocation from flood-prone zones to higher ground;
- Avoid waterlogged roads during heavy rain;
- Keep drainage channels free of debris;
- Monitor weather updates from verified sources;
- Report signs of rising water or overflowing drains to local authorities.
The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, noting that this advisory is part of its broader risk reduction and public awareness campaign.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant, cooperate with emergency services, and share relevant information within their communities as rainfall conditions intensify.
