Reaffirms Commitment to Workers’ Welfare

The Lagos State Government has appealed to the leadership of staff unions at Lagos State University (LASU) to end the ongoing indefinite strike, stressing the importance of dialogue and collaboration in resolving outstanding welfare issues.

In a statement released via the official Twitter handle of the Lagos State Ministry of Tertiary Education on Saturday, the government said it acknowledges the concerns raised by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) — comprising ASUU-LASU, SSANU-LASU, NAAT-LASU, and NASU-LASU — over staff welfare demands.

According to the statement signed by Mamud Hassan, Director of Public Affairs, the government has received formal communication from the unions and has since held high-level meetings involving the Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro, and key officials from the Ministry of Tertiary Education and the Ministry of Establishments and Training.

“During these engagements, it was mutually agreed that industrial peace should be maintained at LASU while the government critically evaluates the unions’ demands,” the statement read.

The government assured the unions that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration remains committed to the welfare of all civil servants, particularly in the tertiary education sector. It further reiterated that efforts are ongoing to arrive at a sustainable and amicable solution to the issues raised.

“We are earnestly appealing to the leadership of JAC to reconsider their stance and suspend the strike action. The prolonged disruption of academic and administrative activities affects not just the academic calendar, but more critically, the future of our students — who are at the heart of the university’s mission,” the statement noted.

Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon. Tolani Sule, also called for understanding and cooperation from all stakeholders. He urged the unions to reflect on the state government’s continuous funding of the university despite the rising demands and pressures of managing Lagos as a growing megacity.

“We believe that with mutual understanding and open dialogue, a lasting solution can be found that benefits all parties involved,” the statement concluded.

The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its dedication to restoring academic activities and ensuring lasting industrial peace at LASU.
