In a renewed push to improve the lives of Nigeria’s senior citizens, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate rollout of free healthcare services for low-income retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

The president also ordered the prompt implementation of long-overdue pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee to protect vulnerable pensioners from economic hardship.

The directive came after a briefing at the State House in Abuja by the Director General of the National Pension Commission (PenCom), Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, who updated the President on ongoing reforms in the pension sector.

According to Tinubu, the initiative forms a vital part of his administration’s broader social protection agenda aimed at ensuring that Nigerians who served the country in their prime years can retire with dignity and access basic health services without financial burden.

“We are determined to make life better for our senior citizens,” the President said, emphasizing the importance of inclusive welfare policies for national development.

Tinubu also instructed PenCom to immediately resolve the long-standing police pension issue, stressing that men and women of the Nigeria Police Force deserve a peaceful and honorable retirement.

During the briefing, PenCom highlighted efforts to safeguard the value of pension assets amid inflation and economic pressures. Plans are also underway to introduce a foreign currency contribution option to allow Nigerians in the diaspora to invest in the pension scheme—an initiative that aligns with the administration’s drive to attract foreign investment and engage the global Nigerian community.

These moves reflect President Tinubu’s wider reform agenda under the Renewed Hope Initiative. Other recent policies include the new national minimum wage proposal, tax and customs reforms to ease the cost of doing business, the expansion of the student loan program, and renewed efforts to implement the school feeding program across public schools.

President Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to inclusive growth, saying:
“Every Nigerian who has served this nation deserves not just gratitude but real support. We will continue to strengthen systems that protect our people.”

The new initiatives are expected to have a direct impact on the lives of retirees while strengthening confidence in the pension system.
