Lagos, Nigeria (ABNews)September 23, 2025– A Lagos-based cleric, Pastor Gideon Oyedepo of the Cherubim and Seraphim Bible Ministries, has raised alarm over a planned Sexathon Guinness World Record attempt in Ikorodu, Lagos State. The pastor described the development as a looming moral disaster and has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government to intervene immediately.

In an open letter addressed to the President, Pastor Oyedepo warned that the event, if allowed to hold, would further erode Nigeria’s cultural and spiritual foundation. He argued that the country is increasingly adopting “foreign ideologies and practices” that run contrary to its values and heritage.

“The soul of Nigeria must be guarded jealously. This proposed event is not just entertainment – it is an attack on the moral fabric of our nation,” Pastor Oyedepo declared.

He urged the government to take swift action against entertainers promoting immorality, singling out social media influencer Mandy Kiss, whom he said should be reprimanded and sent for rehabilitation rather than allowed to influence Nigerian youths.

The cleric based his appeal on biblical principles, citing scriptural warnings that a nation’s destiny is tied to its moral and spiritual condition.

According to him, history shows that great empires such as Babylon and Egypt crumbled after descending into idolatry and immorality. He linked this to the modern-day challenge facing Nigeria, insisting that “national blessing and security are tied to righteousness and integrity, not the adoption of ungodly trends.”

Quoting Daniel 2:21, he emphasized that God alone determines the rise and fall of nations, warning that Nigeria risks losing its divine covering if leaders ignore the signs of moral decline.

Pastor Oyedepo outlined five major points in his appeal to the President and federal authorities:

  1. Defend National Morality: Safeguard Nigeria from destructive cultural practices that contradict biblical and traditional values.
  2. Reject Imported Trends: Resist the pressure to conform to global ideologies that undermine family and human dignity.
  3. Protect the Youth: Shield young Nigerians from influencers promoting rebellion, lust, and moral confusion.
  4. Promote Righteousness: Implement policies rooted in justice, integrity, and godliness.
  5. Preserve National Destiny: Ensure that the nation’s progress aligns with divine principles, not fleeting social experiments.

The proposed Sexathon has triggered widespread reactions across social media platforms and religious circles. While some dismiss it as a publicity stunt, others believe it poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s global image.

Religious leaders, parents, and youth advocates have also voiced concerns about its potential impact on young people already exposed to rising levels of online indecency.

“This is not just about religion. It is about the future of our children and the identity of Nigeria as a nation that still respects decency,” another church elder in Lagos told reporters.

As the controversy grows, Nigerians are watching to see whether the government will respond to calls for intervention. For Pastor Oyedepo and other faith leaders, the issue is not only about stopping the event but also about setting a clear national stance on morality and cultural preservation.

“Guard the soul of Nigeria. Reject ideologies that rebel against God. Uphold righteousness, for therein lies true national security and divine blessing,” Pastor Oyedepo concluded in his message to President Tinubu.
