Lagos, Nigeria — The Ijegun–Ijegemo corridor is undergoing a remarkable transformation as the ongoing reconstruction and expansion works continue to reshape the popular axis into what many residents and traders describe as “the next major market hub in Lagos.”

ABNews, during an on-the-spot assessment of the project this week, observed significant progress on the road construction, particularly the expanded Ijegun roundabout, which is fast becoming a game changer for traffic flow and commercial activities in the area.

Roundabout Expansion Brings Relief to Commuters

The expansion of the Ijegun junction and roundabout—previously notorious for bottlenecks—has been widely applauded by motorists, commercial drivers, and residents who spoke with ABNews. Many described the new layout as a “huge relief” that will address years of traffic congestion that plagued the axis.

Mr. Adewale, a commercial driver operating between Ijegun and Ikotun, said the construction is already making a visible difference.

“Before now, this roundabout was a nightmare. But with this expansion, movement is easier, and we can already feel the improvement even though the work is not finished. We commend the Lagos State government for this,” he told ABNews.

Another resident, Mrs. Tosin Lawal, noted that the improved road structure is gradually changing the face of the community.

“This place is wearing a new look. Businesses are beginning to spring up. When the road is fully completed, this whole axis will become a major commercial point,” she said.

A Boost for Local Economy and Market Growth

Traders and small business owners along the Ijegun–Ijegemo stretch say the construction is sparking new economic expectations. With improved accessibility, many believe the area is positioned to emerge as one of Lagos’ next major market hubs, attracting customers, investors, and logistics operators.

ABNews observed that shops, kiosks, and small markets already appear to be expanding, with more residents expressing optimism that commercial activities will double once the road becomes motorable end-to-end.

Contractor Urged to Fast-Track Completion

Despite the commendations, road users are urging the contractor to expedite the completion of the project, citing the high level of expectation for seamless movement and reduced travel time.

A tricycle operator who spoke anonymously noted:

“We are happy with the work, but we want the contractor to speed it up. People are eager to enjoy the full benefits, especially the free flow of vehicles. The anticipation is high.”

Government Applauded for Intervention

Across interviews conducted by ABNews, one theme remained consistent—gratitude to the Lagos State Government for what residents describe as a long-overdue intervention. The transformation, according to many, is setting a new standard for infrastructural development within the densely populated communities of Alimosho, Ikotun, and Ijegun.

As construction work intensifies, the people of Ijegun–Ijegemo look forward with optimism, hopeful that the ongoing project will deliver not just a better road, but a strengthened local economy and improved daily living conditions.

ABNews will continue to monitor the progress of the road construction and provide updates as the project advances.
