Demands Immediate Return to Constitutional Order

The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly condemned the military coup in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, describing it as a grave setback to democracy and stability in West Africa.
In a statement released on Thursday by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, Nigeria said it received the news of the unconstitutional change of government in Guinea-Bissau with “profound dismay and deep concern.”
According to the statement signed by the Ministry’s Spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria denounced the military takeover as an act that threatens not only Guinea-Bissau’s democratic progress but also the peace and constitutional order of the entire sub-region.
Nigeria stressed that the coup is a direct violation of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, which strictly forbids the seizure of power through unconstitutional means.
The Federal Government expressed solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau, calling for the immediate and unconditional restoration of constitutional rule, the protection of detained officials, and full respect for democratic institutions.
Nigeria also urged the coup leaders to guarantee the safety of all election observers currently in Guinea-Bissau on official duty, emphasizing the need to safeguard the integrity of the recently concluded electoral process.
The statement further appealed to all parties involved to exercise restraint, embrace peaceful dialogue, and respect the will of the people as expressed through the ballot box.
Nigeria warned that those responsible for the coup would be held accountable for actions capable of plunging Guinea-Bissau into chaos and eroding democratic gains.
As a key member of ECOWAS and the African Union, Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to working with regional and international partners to ensure a swift return to normalcy and constitutional governance in Guinea-Bissau.
The statement concluded by reiterating Nigeria’s dedication to promoting democracy, peace, and stability across the African continent.
