Kwara South-A coalition, Concerned Kwara South Youth, has condemned the reported unanimous endorsement of a governorship zoning arrangement to Kwara North, describing the move as a dangerous and retrogressive step capable of deepening division in the state.
In a statement made available to ABNews on the Kwara South platform, the group expressed shock that such a politically sensitive position would be linked to some traditional rulers from the zone, noting that the alleged endorsement runs contrary to democratic principles and the neutral role expected of monarchs in a constitutional democracy.
According to the youths, Nigeria is already grappling with insecurity and ethnic tension, and any action that appears to promote regional favoritism could further inflame mistrust and division among communities.
The group also raised concerns over the motives behind the alleged endorsement, suggesting that some monarchs may have been influenced by personal interests or political promises.
“To preserve their dignity and the integrity of their offices, any traditional ruler associated with this statement must publicly disown it. Silence will only strengthen the perception that they no longer represent the collective interest of their people,” the statement read.
Drawing comparisons with respected traditional authorities in other regions, the group cited the Ooni of Ife as an example of a monarch who has maintained political neutrality over the years, stressing that traditional rulers have no constitutional mandate to determine political succession or speak for millions of citizens without broad consultation.
They further referenced the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, describing him as a symbol of restraint who, in their view, would never take a partisan stance that could destabilise the state.
“Our monarchs must stay out of partisan politics. Their sacred duty is to offer guidance on matters affecting the welfare and safety of their people, not to promote political arrangements that may fuel disunity,” the statement added.
The group argued that instead of involving themselves in political zoning debates, traditional leaders should focus on urgent security challenges facing the region, including the persistent cases of kidnapping and violence affecting both citizens and royal figures.
They questioned when monarchs from Kwara North had ever unanimously endorsed a candidate from Kwara South for governorship, insisting that such a precedent had never existed.
Reiterating their position, the youths maintained that leadership should be determined by competence, character and capacity rather than zoning or ethnic considerations. They stressed that Kwara South is home to numerous qualified and visionary individuals capable of leading the state effectively.
“Let every interested candidate present themselves to the people. Only through a free and fair process can true democracy thrive,” they declared.
The statement concluded with a strong call for transparency, merit-based leadership and respect for the democratic will of the people of Kwara State.
The message was signed by Concerned Kwara South Youth.
