Cotonou, Benin Republic — Security forces in the Republic of Benin have successfully foiled an attempted coup after a group of mutineers in military uniform briefly seized control of the country’s National Television Station on Sunday.
According to initial reports, the soldiers first attempted to gain access to the official residence of President Patrice Talon but were unable to breach the premises. Following the failure of that operation, the group moved to the National Television Station in Cotonou, where they took over the facility and disrupted regular transmission.
The sudden development triggered an immediate response from loyalist forces. The National Guard and other security units were deployed to the area, surrounding the television station and restoring control within hours. By mid-day, security operatives had secured the station and other strategic government locations across the capital.
Local media outlet 24 Hours in Benin reported that discussions are currently underway with the mutineers, who are now contained within the station’s premises. Armed security personnel remain stationed around the building as authorities work to fully resolve the situation.
Residents of Cotonou reported seeing an increased military presence on major roads, while normal activities were temporarily disrupted in some parts of the city. However, calm has gradually returned, with traffic and commercial activities resuming in many areas as the situation stabilised.
Government sources confirmed that President Patrice Talon is safe and remains in control of the government. A brief statement from authorities assured citizens that the situation is under control and urged the public to remain calm as security agencies continue to monitor the area and carry out necessary operations.
At the time of filing this report, no official casualties or damages have been confirmed.
The Republic of Benin, regarded in recent years as one of West Africa’s more politically stable countries, has not experienced a successful military takeover in decades. Sunday’s failed attempt, however, raised concerns about internal discipline within parts of the armed forces and has heightened security alert levels nationwide.
Further updates are expected as investigations begin and authorities provide more information on the identity and motives of those involved.
