The Federal Government has reiterated that the newly enacted tax laws scheduled to take effect from January 1, 2026, are not intended to increase the tax burden on Nigerians but to strengthen the country’s fiscal system and promote fairness.

In a statement released on Monday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said the reforms, including those that already took effect on June 26, 2025, are part of a broader effort to reposition Nigeria’s tax framework for long-term economic stability and growth.

According to the President, the new laws are designed to bring about structural reforms, promote harmonisation across the tax system, and strengthen the social contract between the government and citizens. He stressed that the reforms are aimed at improving efficiency and fairness, not at imposing additional financial pressure on individuals or businesses.

“These reforms represent a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a fair, competitive, and resilient fiscal system,” the President said, adding that the administration remains committed to ensuring that the reforms deliver tangible benefits to Nigerians.

Addressing concerns and public debates surrounding some provisions of the new laws, President Tinubu noted that no substantial issues have been identified that would warrant halting or reversing the reform process. He emphasised that trust in governance is built through consistency, transparency, and responsible decision-making, not through abrupt or reactionary actions.

The President further assured Nigerians that his administration remains open to engagement and will continue to work closely with the National Assembly to address any genuine concerns that may arise during implementation.

“Our commitment is to due process and the integrity of the laws we enact. We will continue to act in the best interest of Nigerians to ensure a tax system that promotes prosperity, accountability, and shared responsibility,” he said.

The Federal Government has therefore urged all stakeholders to support the implementation phase of the reforms, describing it as a crucial step toward building a stronger and more sustainable economic future for the country.
