Says On-Pitch Fire Is What Super Eagles Need
By ABNews Sports Desk
Former Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi, has thrown his support behind Victor Osimhen’s intense and emotional style of play, saying he “loves what he saw on the pitch” despite criticism from some quarters, ABNews reports.
Speaking on his podcast and monitored by ABNews, Mikel described the Napoli striker as a “warrior” whose passion, aggression and fighting spirit are vital to the national team’s performance.
“Victor is a fantastic, talented player. He plays like a warrior. He wears his heart on his sleeve, he gets angry, he fights defenders; and that’s what you want to see,” Mikel said.
Mikel noted that Osimhen’s visible emotions and confrontational approach should not be misunderstood as indiscipline, but rather as a reflection of his deep commitment to winning and giving everything for the team.
He also defended the striker over a recent on-pitch argument involving Osimhen and a teammate, an incident that sparked mixed reactions among fans and commentators.
“I actually enjoyed it. I like seeing that kind of argument on the pitch. It shows passion, it shows hunger. That fight and intensity have been missing from the national team for a long time,” he added.
According to the former Chelsea midfielder, Osimhen’s frustration during the match was understandable, especially after already scoring twice.
“He had two goals and as a striker, of course you want a hat-trick. That frustration is normal. It shows how badly he wants to win and help the team,” Mikel explained.
Mikel further stressed that Osimhen’s influence goes beyond goals, praising his off-the-ball work, pressing, and movement, which he said makes the entire team perform better.
“People need to give Victor massive credit. Not just for scoring, but for how he helps the team play — his runs, his fight, everything,” he said.
He concluded by urging Super Eagles players to maintain a warrior mentality whenever they put on the national jersey.
“When you play for Nigeria, you must fight on the pitch. You must play with anger, with intensity, and give everything. That’s how it should be,” Mikel stated.
ABNews reports that Mikel’s comments come amid ongoing debates over player conduct and team chemistry within the Super Eagles, with many fans calling for stronger commitment and visible passion from players during international fixtures.
