Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured a convincing 2–0 victory over Algeria in their AFCON quarter-final encounter, sealing qualification for the semi-final stage of the competition where they will take on hosts Morocco.
The encounter remained goalless at halftime despite Nigeria controlling much of the play and creating several scoring opportunities. Algeria’s defence initially stood firm, denying the Eagles despite sustained pressure and quick attacking transitions from the West Africans.
However, the breakthrough came moments after the restart when Victor Osimhen powered in a header from close range after connecting with a well-delivered cross, putting Nigeria firmly in control of the contest.
Nigeria continued to dictate the tempo of the match and their dominance soon produced a second goal. Akor Adams calmly finished off a swift attacking move to double the advantage, effectively ending Algeria’s hopes of a comeback and igniting celebrations among Nigerian supporters.

The Super Eagles carried forward the confidence from their emphatic 4–0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16, maintaining an aggressive approach that kept Algeria pinned back for long stretches. Osimhen, Adams and midfielder Alex Iwobi combined effectively, constantly stretching the Algerian backline with pace and movement.
Although Nigeria had gone close several times in the first half, including a goal-line clearance and a narrow miss from Adams, it was after the interval that they fully imposed themselves and tightened control of the match.
Algeria, three-time champions of the tournament, struggled to cope with Nigeria’s intensity and pressing game. The North Africans, who had conceded only once before this match, failed to create clear scoring chances and rarely troubled goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
Captain Riyad Mahrez attempted to rally his side and spark counter-attacks, but Nigeria’s organized defence and midfield discipline prevented the Fennec Foxes from finding any real rhythm.
With the victory, Nigeria progresses to the last four of the tournament, setting up a tough semi-final clash against Morocco, who earlier defeated Cameroon 2–0 in their quarter-final tie.
The result strengthens Nigeria’s title credentials and keeps alive their ambition of lifting the AFCON trophy for the first time since 2013, as the Super Eagles continue their quest for continental glory.
